Majka & Pogačar join forces for another team triumph
Tadej Pogačar will take the green jersey to Novo mesto, but the victory on the queen mountain stage goes to Rafal Majka (both UAE Team Emirates). Domen Novak (Bahrain-Victorious) crossed the finish line in 11th and is still third overall. Fourth stage of Tour of Slovenia was amazing also thanks to fantastic fans!
Pogačar & Majka showed complete dominance in the last five kilometers of the finish climb, they also crossed the finish line on Velika planina together. Big smiles on their faces said a lot! Tadej gave a stage victory to his teammate, but made sure that he’ll stay in the overall lead. Third place finisher Fernando Barcelo Aragon(Caja Rual – Seguros RGA) was 22 second behind the winners. Slovenian Domen Novak crossed the finish line in 11th and kept 3rd place overall, which was his goal for the day. Two more Slovenians finished in the top-30 – Gal Glivar (Adria Mobil) in 23rd and Jaka Primožič (Team Slovenia) in 29th.
Rafal Majka after the stage victory: “We had a great day. We did last climb together, then Tadej said I should win the stage. I'm so happy for this victory and also because the team is working really, really well. I'm now also in a good position for second overall. This is all very good before the Tour de France, we try to stay safe and win races.
Atmosphere in Slovenia is really good, there are so many people by the roads. You could only see people in Komenda, Tadej's home town, and nothing else. The cycling grown so much since I was racing here in 2017.”
Breakaway riders did manage to create a bigger gap today, but it melted quickly towards Črnivec and then to Velika planina. Duo Majka/Pogačar attacked with 5 kilometers to go and they were alone all the way to the finish line. They charged hard, but towards the end they backed down and finished the day in relaxed manner. This is second stage victory for Majka on 28th Tour of Slovenia, he already has stage and overall victory from 2017.
Tour of Slovenia will finish tomorrow in Novo mesto. 155 kilometers long race will take riders from Vrhnika to the “home” of Slovenian tour, but with a climb to Trška gora before the finish it’s going to be interesting for sure.
